Specialized Training Course on Urban Sanitation and its Challenges

Poor sanitation situation is acute and widespread in Bangladesh, where a significant proportion of the population bears the burden of disease that is attributed to inadequate access to safe drinking water, sanitation and unhygienic practices. Both in rural and urban areas, a large part of the population still practice open defecation. The scenario in urban slums is even more alarming. Not only excreta, generated solid waste are also disposed indiscriminately and system to drain out waste and storm water is also poor and inadequate. These are considered to be the major contributors of serious environmental hazards in urban areas.

Provision of sustainable sanitation facilities to all residents including the poor, is a basic responsibility of service providers. Moreover, it forms a critical component in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Presently, with rapid rate of urbanization the sanitation service levels in urban areas of Bangladesh are inadequate and financially unsustainable, particularly for the urban poor. The utility service providers are not institutionally obliged to provide sanitation services in the slum areas considering that most of those are illegal settlements. Sustainability of the WSS system is always a deep concern of the stakeholders due to the threat of eviction. However in order to achieve our aspirations of 100% sanitation coverage the existing institutional, technological and financial challenges of urban sanitation need to be addressed immediately.

With a view to improve the knowledge base regarding this scenario, ITN-BUET has incorporated a 3-day long specialized course on Urban Sanitation and its Challenges in its training agenda for the WSS professionals and Conservancy Staffs of Municipalities.

The main objectives of this training course are to:

  • Introduce the concept of sanitation and its relation with health;
  • Make participants aware of various components of sanitation which includes excreta disposal, solid waste management, wastewater and storm water treatment, drainage and recycling, health promotion and hygiene education;
  • Create innovative approaches to sanitation with regard to management and technological aspects;
  • Impart knowledge on institutional arrangement, peoples participation and sustainability and cross cutting issues on urban sanitation;
  • Make participants familiar with existing challenges of urban sanitation and possible way forward.

Except for the introduction of few theoretical concepts, the course will follow a participatory mode. It will draw on practical experiences of the participants and include some exercises to clarify it.

The course is designed for WSS professionals and Conservancy Staffs of Municipalities.
