About

The project under EU – ASIA PRO ECO PROGRAMME, Phase II aims to identify appropriate strategies, to develop training material and to strengthen local capacity to involve communities in water supply and sanitation interventions in poor urban areas.

The main target group (beneficiaries) are trainers from institutions dealing with capacity building on water supply and sanitation in poor urban areas in Bangladesh and Nepal, particularly those providing training to government agencies, local government bodies, NGOs and grassroots organizations. The action includes replication of the training activities among policy-makers, implementers and members of grassroots organizations and NGOs.

 
General objectives

To improve the knowledge and skills of urban environment stakeholders for designing and managing water supply and sanitation (WSS) projects involving community participation in poor urban areas.

To improve local capacity to develop and implement appropriate urban environmental policies, system of governance and techniques for enhancing community involvement in WSS interventions.

 
Specific objectives
  1. To identify best practices and main shortcomings of community involvement in WSS interventions in urban areas, by means of assessing 20 case studies In Bangladesh and Nepal.
  2. Building on the information gathered from the case studies, to develop curriculum (tailor-made course) and training materials on how and to what extent local community involvement may aid to meet the millennium development goals (MDG) for water supply and sanitation (WSS) in poor urban areas in Asia.
  3. To build local capacity among local institutions involved in providing technical instruction to policy-makers, grassroots organization, and members of non-profit implementing bodies on how to make use of community participation in WSS interventions in poor urban areas.
  4. To build local capacity among policy makers, members of grassroots organizations and NGOs deal with WSS interventions in poor urban areas in Bangladesh and Nepal on how to design and implement projects involving community participation in WSS interventions in poor urban areas.
