SUMMARY:🚰 City-San Connect | Quarterly Learning Webinar Series 🌍
DESCRIPTION:About City-San Connect\nCity-San Connect is a new quarterly webinar series launched by ITN-BUET under the SaniRepo platform. It is designed to foster cross-city learning and collaboration\, bringing together local governments\, sector professionals\, development partners\, and researchers to discuss real challenges and practical solutions in urban sanitation. \nEvery session highlights a key theme\, combining expert presentations\, city case studies\, and open discussions. The webinars are hosted in partnership with national and international collaborators and are open to participants across the region and beyond. \nWhy Climate-Resilient WASH Matters\nClimate change is no longer a distant threat—it is a present challenge for urban sanitation. Cities are increasingly exposed to rising temperatures\, intense rainfall\, waterlogging\, and other climate-related shocks that disrupt sanitation systems across the chain—from household containment to treatment and safe reuse. \nAs we pursue SDG 6—universal access to safe water and sanitation\, there is an urgent need to design systems that are not only inclusive and sustainable\, but also climate-resilient. This calls for an adaptive mindset and innovative technologies that can withstand stress\, ensure continuity of service\, and protect vulnerable populations. \nThis is why the focus on climate-resilient WASH is so important. We need to rethink how our sanitation systems are planned\, built\, and managed so they can adapt to changing weather\, protect people’s health\, and serve communities better even in crisis. \nThis Session’s Focus: Climate Resilient WASH\nThe upcoming session on August 26\, 2025\, will explore how cities are applying technology and innovative approaches to make sanitation systems more resilient to climate impacts. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nHow climate change is affecting sanitation systems—both infrastructure and service delivery\nWhat technological solutions (e.g. modular STPs\, container-based sanitation\, nature-based systems\, sensor-driven monitoring) cities are piloting or scaling up\nHow planning tools and decision-support models are helping cities adapt to extreme climate events\nWhat city-level strategies\, governance practices\, and financing approaches are enabling climate-smart sanitation\nInsights from Bangladeshi cities and international experiences on building adaptive and inclusive systems\n\nThis 90-minute virtual session will include presentations from national and international experts\, followed by interactive discussion and Q&A. \nWhy Join?\nCity-San Connect is more than just a webinar—it’s a platform for connecting cities through shared learning. By showcasing case studies from different cities\, the platform allows participants to see what’s working in similar contexts and what can be adapted to their own. \nYou’ll benefit from: \n\nReal stories and solutions from the ground\nFresh perspectives on sanitation and climate resilience\nA chance to share your own experiences and ask questions\nOpportunities to build partnerships with other cities\, institutions\, and professionals\nAccess to high-quality content\, including recordings\, on Sani Repo\, the growing digital library for WASH learning\n\nIt’s a platform for inspiration\, exchange\, and action open to all who care about making sanitation systems stronger\, smarter\, and more inclusive. \nEvent Details\n🎯Theme- 1: Climate Resilient WASH🗓️ Date: Tuesday\, August 26\, 2025🕚 Time: 11:00 – 12:30 PM (GMT+6)📍 Platform: Zoom | Hosted by ITN-BUET Webinar Link: https://bdren.zoom.us/j/91589990741Zoom ID # 915 8999 0741 \nLet’s Learn and Lead Together\nWhether you work in local government\, manage sanitation services\, support communities\, or contribute to policy and research your experience matters. SUMMARY:Training on Climate-Resilient Sanitation Safety Planning
DESCRIPTION:About the Training\nSanitation efforts in developing countries often prioritize building toilets (hardware) over public health outcomes. A more comprehensive approach is needed\, integrating public health considerations into sanitation planning and infrastructure development. Sanitation Safety Planning (SSP) is a risk management tool for sanitation. It gathers stakeholders from various sectors to identify health risks throughout the sanitation system. Together\, they agree on improvements and monitor progress. This ensures control measures target the biggest risks\, leading to gradual improvements over time. Climate-resilient Sanitation Safety Planning (CR-SSP) is a process that helps communities improve their sanitation systems in a way that can withstand the effects of climate change. Climate change can increase the risk of flooding\, droughts\, and other extreme weather events\, which can damage sanitation systems and lead to the spread of disease. CR-SSP helps communities identify these risks and develop strategies to mitigate them. ITN-BUET is going to organize a three-day training program on ‘Climate-resilient Sanitation Safety Planning (CR-SSP)’ for safely managed sanitation systems. This three-day training program will emphasize the crucial link between understanding health risks and effective sanitation management and investment. It aligns with WHO’s 2022 and 2018 guidelines\, emphasizing risk-based management for sanitation systems. \nObjectives\nThe program aims to establish a pool of national and international sanitation players who have in-depth understanding of SSP’s key concepts and principles. In line with this objective\, the program will:• Help develop an understanding about the SSP process• Help build an understanding of the procedure for risk assessment and management in line with WHO guidelines on sanitation and health\, covering all steps of the sanitation chain\, with or without safe end use• Help gain an understanding about preparing SSP using step-by-step guidance• Experience practical application of SSP through exposure visit \nWho Should Attend?\nThis course welcomes enrollment from a wide range of participants working in sanitation\, public health\, environmental improvement\, researchers\, etc. \nCourse Fee (Including Training Kits\, Food and Field Visit)\nNational Participants: BDT 20\,000International Participants: USD 500 (With full accommodation) \n*Course Fee Included Training Kits\, Food and Field Visit**Upon successful completion of the training program\, participants will be granted a one-year complimentary membership to the International Water Association (IWA). \nApplication Deadline: \n30th October 2024 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View Flyer\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Apply Now\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n For further information\, please contact:\nSubrata PaulTraining SpecialistITN-BUETEmail: subrata@itn-buet.orgPhone: +8809606667700 Ext.- 5082

SUMMARY:International training and exposure visit on Urban Rainwater Harvesting System
DESCRIPTION:Why Rainwater Harvesting?\nRainwater harvesting system (RWHS) provides a cost-effective and practical nature-based solution to address the emerging water crisis due to climate change and rapid population growth in urban context. Bangladesh National Water Policy 1999 recognises rainwater as the third source of water. In urban areas\, rainwater can be used for flushing toilets\, watering gardens\, washing cars and floors\, and other non-potable purposes\, thereby reducing dependency on existing water supply sources. At the same time\, rainwater harvesting can reduce the pressure on urban drainage system and avoid urban water-logging. Moreover\, with the increasing industrial water demand\, it can be an alternative water source. To meet international buyers’ compliance requirements and maintain factory standards\, RMG factories are also encouraged to install RWHS in their premises\, which can be used for industrial production and groundwater recharge. \nMany initiatives and programmes have recently been promoting rainwater harvesting systems in urban and industrial buildings. Incorporating rainwater management as a separate chapter in the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) 2020 emphasises its significance. \nPractitioners\, planners\, academicians\, industrialists\, students\, researchers\, and policymakers working on water and environmental issues need to be sensitised and capacitated on rainwater harvesting systems to tackle the water crisis and ensure future water security. In this regard\, WaterAid Bangladesh in collaboration with International Training Network Centre\, BUET (ITN-BUET) and International Water Association (IWA) is organising the international training and exposure visit 2024 on urban rainwater harvesting system. \nLearning Objective\nThe participants will get the opportunity to learn from national and international technical experts\, academicians and professionals who have experience in implementing RWHS. SUMMARY:The International Conference on Water and Flood Management (ICWFM) 2023
DESCRIPTION:Title: Building Climate Resilient WASH Systems: Strategies for a Sustainable Future \nConference Theme: Water Infrastructure and Resilient Development \nBackground: \nAs a low-lying\, deltaic country\, Bangladesh is highly affected by the current and projected impacts of climate change. Climate change is exacerbating both slow (sea-level rise\, temperature rise)\, medium (drought occurrence\, changing rainfall patterns)\, and fast onset (storms including cyclones\, storm surges\, riverine-\, coastal\, and flash floods) hazards and their knock-on effects (e.g.\, erosion\, landslides). \nBangladesh has made commendable progress in the Water\, Sanitation\, and Hygiene (WASH) sector\, recognizing its significance for sustainable development and public health. However\, the country faces significant challenges due to the adverse effects of climate change towards the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. \nThe linkage between Water\, Sanitation\, and Hygiene (WASH) and climate change is undeniable. Climate change impacts the availability\, quality\, and distribution of water resources\, which in turn directly affects WASH services and practices. Rising temperatures\, changing rainfall patterns\, and increased frequency of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods all contribute to water scarcity\, reduced water quality\, and compromised sanitation systems. The country’s geographical location next to the Bay of Bengal\, low-lying terrain\, monsoons\, and significant rivers render the country more vulnerable to natural hazards. From 1970-2019\, storms were the most frequent disaster to affect Bangladesh at 52%\, followed by floods at 31%\, with the remaining disasters being epidemics\, earthquakes\, droughts\, and landslides. Additionally\, climate change exacerbates existing challenges faced by vulnerable communities\, including limited access to safe drinking water\, sanitation facilities\, and proper hygiene practices. This affects marginalized and vulnerable groups disproportionately\, like communities in saline-prone coastal areas\, in drought-prone areas\, or in the hill tracks. \nClimate resilient development involves measures and activities that will deliver benefits under all potential future climate scenarios and can cope with uncertainties over future conditions. Water is the means through which climate change is felt first. Resilient WASH programming is crucial to ensure that WASH infrastructure and services are sustainable and resilient to climate-related risks\, safeguard public health\, and promote environmental sustainability. As communities are increasingly affected\, it is clear that climate change risk assessment and building the resilience of communities\, water and sanitation systems\, and institutions must be at the core of sectoral programme design\, planning resource allocation\, implementation\, and monitoring. \nObjectives and rationale of the side event: \nThis event aims to explore the critical intersection of climate change and water\, sanitation\, and hygiene (WASH) systems. As the effects of climate change intensify\, it is imperative to develop and implement climate-resilient WASH strategies to ensure the availability\, accessibility\, and quality of water\, sanitation\, and hygiene services for all. This session will bring together experts\, practitioners\, policymakers\, and researchers to discuss innovative approaches\, best practices\, and transformative solutions in building climate-resilient WASH systems. By sharing knowledge\, experiences\, and lessons learned\, this session will contribute to collective efforts to address the challenges posed by climate change and advance sustainable development goals. \nDate: Monday\, 16th October 2023 \nTime: 12:00 to 1:30 PM (1.5 hrs) \nVenue: CIRDAP Auditorium \nSession Format: \nKeynote Address (15 minutes): An eminent expert will provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities in building climate-resilient WASH systems\, setting the stage for the session. \nKeynote Speaker: Saifur Rahman\, Superintending Engineer\, Ground water circle\, DPHE \nPanel Discussion (40 minutes): A diverse panel of experts representing academia\, governmental and non-governmental organizations\, development partners\, I/NGOs\, Private sector will share their experiences\, insights\, and lessons learned in implementing climate-resilient WASH strategies.
