ITN-BUET facilitated a five-day training titled \u201cClimate Resilient Water Safety Plan (CR-WSP)\u201d under the Strengthening Institutions for Climate Change Adapted Water Resource Management in Dhaka (SAIDABAD) Project. The training was organized in association with Dhaka WASA, with support from GIZ Bangladesh, from 18 to 22 April 2026 at Heritage Resort. The training aimed to strengthen institutional capacity for developing and implementing climate-resilient water safety plans to protect Haria Intake of Saidabad Water Treatment Plant Phase-III, ensuring safe and sustainable water supply systems in Dhaka.<\/p>\n
The inauguration session was graced by the Chief Guest, Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, Project Director of Saidabad Water Treatment Plant Phase-III Project. Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman emphasized the importance of Water Safety Plans in ensuring safe and climate-resilient water supply systems for Dhaka. He highlighted the ongoing shift towards surface water sources under major initiatives such as the Saidabad Phase-III project, stressing the need for integrated approaches to address emerging challenges in the water sector. Special Guest Mr. Mohammad Solaiman Haider, Director of the Department of Environment (DoE), underscored the importance of institutional coordination and proactive risk management for safe water service delivery.<\/p>\n
The training brought together stakeholders from four municipalities which are Madhabdi, Araihazar, Gopaldi, and Sonargaon Pourashava; and four unions, which include Paikarchar and Mahishasura (Narsingdi), Baidyerbazar and Mograpara (Sonargaon); and officials from the Department of Environment (DoE) and the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) of Narayanganj and Narsingdi districts.<\/p>\n

Over the five days, 22 participants, including 5 female participants, engaged in sessions on CR-WSP development, which included system description, hazard identification, risk assessment, and monitoring frameworks. Facilitators from ITN-BUET guided practical exercises, complemented by a field visit to the Haria intake and surrounding canal systems, where participants observed key pollution sources such as wastewater discharge, industrial effluents, and solid waste dumping.<\/p>\n
The closing ceremony was graced by Prof. Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz, Director of ITN-BUET, along with Mr. Mohammad Solaiman Haider from DoE, Mr. Richard Below from GIZ Bangladesh, and Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman from DWASA. Prof. Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz emphasized the importance of engaging industries in protecting the Meghna River ecosystem and highlighted the need for strengthened implementation capacity and actionable planning for ensuring water safety. Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman acknowledged the strengthened sense of ownership for protecting the water supply system among the participants as a key outcome of the training.<\/p>\n

The training concluded with feedback from the participants in the training, who underscored enhancement in technical knowledge of the Water Safety Plan throughout the training and recognized their integral role within the water supply system. The program served as an effective platform for capacity building and stakeholder engagement, fostering a shared commitment toward protecting the Haria intake and the Meghna River system.<\/p>\n
