ITN-BUET successfully organized a Mentee City Exposure Visit to Kushtia Municipality on 17 August 2026, bringing together 16 municipal officials from eight municipalities as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of municipalities through peer learning and practical field-based exposure.<\/p>\n
The exposure visit was designed to provide participating municipalities with firsthand experience of how a mentor city is implementing Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) and developing integrated urban sanitation and waste management systems to ensure safely managed sanitation services for all. As a designated mentor city, Kushtia Municipality facilitated the visit and shared its experience, operational practices, and lessons learned with the participating mentee municipalities.<\/p>\n
The visit covered a wide range of urban sanitation and waste management infrastructure across the city. Participants toured few key facilities including the public toilet at Kushtia central bus stand, the medical waste treatment plant, the solid waste management (SWM) facility, the Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP), the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), and the Integrated Municipal Information System (IMIS) of Kushtia Municipality. Each of these facilities represents a critical component of a comprehensive and inclusive urban sanitation system.<\/p>\n

Officials in charge of each facility guided the participants through their respective sites, explaining day-to-day operations, treatment processes, and overall waste management procedures in detail. They shared practical insights on how the systems are managed, what challenges they face, and how those challenges have been addressed over time. This hands-on explanation gave participants a clear and realistic understanding of what it takes to run an effective municipal waste management system.<\/p>\n
Interactive question-and-answer sessions were conducted at each facility, encouraging participants to engage directly with local officials, exchange experiences, and discuss practical solutions relevant to their own municipalities. The peer-learning approach enabled participants to gain a realistic understanding of the institutional, technical, and operational requirements for establishing sustainable and inclusive municipal sanitation services.<\/p>\n
The visit generated strong interest among the participating municipalities in adopting the CWIS approach. At the conclusion of the programme, the participating officials expressed their commitment to applying the knowledge, practices, and lessons learned from Kushtia in their respective municipalities. They recognized the importance of building and improving local waste management infrastructure, and pledged to take concrete steps towards more effective, inclusive, and sustainable urban sanitation systems in their respective cities.<\/p>\n

Officials from the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) actively participated in the exposure visit alongside the municipal officials, engaging directly with Kushtia Municipality to gain practical insights into the implementation of Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS). The visit was particularly significant as DPHE is exploring the integration of the CWIS approach into its upcoming and ongoing programmes. Through firsthand observation and discussions with Kushtia officials, DPHE representatives learned about the institutional, operational, and technical aspects of translating CWIS principles into practice. Their participation further strengthened the peer-learning platform and highlighted the growing commitment of national and local stakeholders to mainstream CWIS in Bangladesh. ITN-BUET facilitated and coordinated the visit, ensuring meaningful knowledge exchange among DPHE, mentor, and mentee municipalities.<\/p>\n
The Mentee City Exposure Visit forms part of ITN-BUET\u2019s broader capacity-building and knowledge-sharing efforts to advance Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) and strengthen municipal sanitation systems across Bangladesh. Through the mentor\u2013mentee city approach, ITN-BUET promotes practical peer learning, enabling municipalities to share proven practices, innovations, and lessons from their own experiences. The initiative is designed not only to build the capacity of mentee cities but also to encourage municipalities with established sanitation systems to emerge as mentor cities and support others in their journey towards improved and sustainable sanitation. By fostering a growing network of mentor cities and facilitating continuous knowledge exchange, ITN-BUET aims to accelerate the adoption and scaling of CWIS across Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
The successful visit demonstrated the value of experience-driven peer learning, providing municipal officials with practical insights that can be translated into action within their own cities and contributing to Bangladesh’s broader efforts towards improved urban sanitation and waste management.<\/p>\n
