As climate-induced disasters, displacement, and humanitarian crises continue to rise across South and Southeast Asia, the need for skilled WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) professionals capable of responding effectively in emergency settings has never been more urgent. Against this backdrop, a three-day international training program on “WASH in Emergency Settings” was held from 20-22 August 2026 at the WASH Training Centre, DPHE, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, successfully organized by the Institute of Disaster Management (IDM), Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET). The program brought together 25 participants, including 8 female participants, from five universities across three countries: KUET and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) from Bangladesh, Pokhara University from Nepal, and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Andalas University from Indonesia. Their participation underscored the value of regional collaboration and knowledge exchange in building WASH capacity for disaster response and humanitarian action.<\/p>\n
The program opened on Day 1 with registration, followed by an inauguration segment featuring remarks from distinguished guests, including Prof. Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, Regional Director, GSGS Regional Hub for South and Southeast Asia; Mr. Raphael Nwozor, UNICEF; Prof. Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz, Director, ITN, BUET; and Prof. Dr. Md. Shahjahan Ali, Director, IDM, KUET, who welcomed participants and reflected on the significance of building regional WASH capacity for disaster and emergency response. Following participant introductions, the technical sessions began in earnest.<\/p>\n

Designed to bridge theory and practice, the training combined expert-led sessions, research presentations, and a field visit to the Rohingya camps, facilitated by a team of academics and humanitarian practitioners. Day 1 covered foundational topics, including an introduction to WASH in emergencies by Dr. Anjum Tasnuva (KUET), climate change and disaster risk reduction by Prof. Dr. Md. Shahjahan Ali (KUET), hygiene promotion and public health by Dr. Mohammad Ismail Hossain (KUET), and WASH service delivery under the Rohingya humanitarian response, presented by Mr. Raphael Nwozor (UNICEF) drawing on the organization’s field experience. The day closed with a session on fecal sludge management in the Rohingya camps by Mr. Maharam Dakua (ITN-BUET), alongside two rounds of participants’ research presentations.<\/p>\n
Day 2 advanced into applied topics, beginning with emergency water supply systems, presented by Dr. Md. Jalal Uddin (KUET), followed by SPHERE standards and humanitarian principles, led by Dr. Mohammad Ismail Hossain (KUET). Dr. Md. Shofiqul Islam (KUET) then presented on innovative technologies in emergency WASH, while Mr. Subrata Paul (BUET) briefed participants ahead of the field visit. The day concluded with further research presentations and a session on sanitation systems in emergency settings by Mr. Md. Azizur Rahman (ITN-BUET).<\/p>\n
On Day 3, participants undertook a technical field visit to the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar, coordinated by Mr. Subrata Paul (BUET). Guided by Mr. G. M. Muktadir (DPHE), they observed selected WASH facilities, water supply systems, and an integrated waste management plant, and interacted directly with field practitioners. This hands-on experience connected classroom learning to real-world practice, sharpening participants’ technical understanding, problem-solving skills, and teamwork in disaster and emergency contexts. The program concluded with a feedback session followed by a certificate-giving ceremony and closing session, both led by IDM-KUET.<\/p>\n

A key academic component throughout the training was the research presentation and experience-sharing sessions, where participants from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Indonesia, organized into four groups, presented their ongoing research and professional perspectives on WASH challenges and solutions across different humanitarian contexts-fostering academic dialogue and laying the groundwork for future cross-border research collaboration.<\/p>\n
At the closing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, Regional Director, GSGS Regional Hub for South and Southeast Asia, and Prof. Dr. Md. Shahjahan Ali, Director, IDM, KUET, delivered closing remarks. Prof. Ahmed emphasized the rising need for regional collaboration and capacity building in WASH education amid growing climate-induced disasters and humanitarian crises, calling for a new generation of WASH professionals equipped with technical expertise, innovation, and field experience. Prof. Ali highlighted the importance of integrating WASH management with disaster risk reduction, stressing that skilled professionals must be able to translate technical knowledge into effective field-level action-ensuring safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services reach vulnerable, disaster-affected communities.<\/p>\n
