ITN-BUET organized a research dissemination event on 19 November 2024 showcasing two\u00a0 projects exploring the prospective utilization of medical waste incineration ash and sewage sludge ash for artificial aggregate preparation and sustainable upgradation of sanitation workers\u2019 living conditions. Government officials, researchers, academics, and WASH sector professionals attended the event. They praised the research initiatives, exchanged insights, and provided directives.<\/p>\n

At the event, Lt Col Mohammed Russedul Islam, PhD, Associate Professor, MIST shared insights from his research project \u2018Strength and Durability of Artificial Aggregate by Geo-polymerization of Sewage Sludge and Medical Waste Incineration Ash\u2019. He mentioned that the research had the potential to reduce the burden of importing crushed stone by the Bangladesh Government while simultaneously creating avenues for sustainable waste management and agricultural topsoil (extensively required for clay brick production) preservation.<\/p>\n
Dr. Anirban Mostafa, Professor, Khulna University, shared findings from his research project on\u00a0\u2018Upgrading Living Conditions of Sanitation Workers: Towards Sustainable Settlement and Livelihood\u2019 along with the co-principal investigator Dr. Afroza Parvin. The investigators presented an innovative approach to improve the living standards of sanitation workers in a way that respects their socio-cultural identity while addressing both immediate needs and long-term sustainability goals.<\/p>\n

Prof. Dr. M. Habibur Rahman appraised the findings of the research presentations. He highlighted the value of their work in advancing knowledge and fostering intellectual progress.<\/p>\n
Prof. Dr. Tanvir Ahmed discussed the ongoing research initiatives supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, spanning various areas, including sanitation, solid waste management, fecal sludge management, and Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS). He encouraged the researchers, especially the young professionals, to foster a culture of research in their respective institutions and come up with innovative solutions to the various problems associated with fecal sludge management.<\/p>\n
