Capacity Building on FSM & CWIS in collaboration with DPHE and DUET

ITN-BUET in collaboration with DPHE and relevant sector partners is delivering capacity building training to Paurashava and relevant DPHE officials on citywide inclusive sanitation and sustainable fecal sludge management. More than 80 officials received a specialized Training course on ‘Fecal Sludge Management: An element of City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation’. In this connection, the fourth batch of Paurashava officials received training at Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Gazipur, another sector partner for capacity building training, during November 24-28, 2019. The training also comprised an  exposure visit at Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant in Faridpur Municipality.

The training was facilitated by Dr. Md. Akramul Alam, Professor, DUET, Mr. Sanjoy Mukherjee, Capacity Building Consultant and Mr. Mohammad Imtiaz Sharif, Training Specialist, ITN-BUET. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Md. Showkat Osman, Professor, Civil Engineering, DUET. In his speech Dr. Showkat Osman told that there is no age limit for learning and he hoped this training will help the participants to learn the updated concept of sanitation.

Total 32 officials from 8 Paurashavas and relevant DPHE offices participated in the training event. The Paurashavas are: Ghatail, Sreebardi, Dewanganj, Kaliakair, Kalihati, Sakhipur, Saidpur and Lakshmipur. The participants visited the Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) in Faridpur Paurashava. The plant visit was facilitated by Practical Action Bangladesh.

In the closing ceremony Mr. Md. Ziaul Haque, Panel Mayor, Saidpur Paurashava stated the training knowledge would be highly beneficial for the participants to implement FSM at their own Paurashavas. Mr. Abu Hanif Azad, Mayor, Sakhipur Paurashava told that leadership from the Mayor is highly important to ensure successful implementation of FSM. In his speech, Mr. Shahiduzzaman Khan, Mayor, Ghatail Paurashava praised the way the training sessions were designed in order to ensure successful delivery of knowledge among the participants. Mr. Md. Abu Sayed, Mayor, Sreebardi Paurashava hoped that the Paurashava officials will work based on their action plan and he committed to provide all kind of support.

Mr. Fahim Hasan Sirajee, Executive Engineer, DPHE said that DPHE is highly committed towards attainment of SDG 6.2 and expected that the Mayors, councilors and city officials as well as DPHE officials will work closely to attain SDG 6.2. Mr. Alauddin Ahmed, Project Manager, ITN-BUET said that ITN-BUET will continue their FSM/CWIS capacity building support to the Paurashavas The training ended with the commitments of the participants to apply their knowledge in practical fields.
