A three-day Training Workshop for CWIS (Citywide Inclusive Sanitation) Mentor Cities was successfully conducted from January 4 to January 6, 2025, at ITN-BUET Dhaka and CCULB Resort in Gazipur. The workshop was attended by 20 participants, including representatives from six mentor cities — Saidpur, Laxmipur, Faridpur, Jhenaidah, Kushtia, and Sakhipur — along with sanitation professionals and key stakeholders.

The event began with a self-introduction session led by Mr. Subrata Paul, Training Specialist, ITN-BUET, followed by a welcome note from Mr. Alauddin Ahmed, Project Manager, ITN-BUET.

The Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman, honorable Vice Chancellor of BUET, officially inaugurated the workshop. In his inaugural speech, he praised the mentor cities for their pivotal role in setting benchmarks for cleaner and more inclusive urban environments.

An introductory speech was delivered by Mr. Abdullah Al-Muyeed, Chief Operating Officer, CWIS-FSM Support Cell, DPHE, highlighting the significance of CWIS framework in achieving inclusive sanitation.

The workshop featured special guest speeches by Prof. Dr. Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET); Mr. Md. Shafiqul Hassan, Co-Chair of the CWIS-FSM Support Cell, DPHE; and Mr. Eheteshamul Russel Khan, Additional Chief Engineer (Planning) at the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE).

Prof. Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz, Director of ITN-BUET, chaired the event, emphasizing the responsibilities of mentor city representatives in setting examples for other cities.

The second day focused on city-led initiatives under CWIS framework, including equity, safety, sustainability, responsibility, accountability, and resource planning and management. Participants shared their cities’ progress, challenges, and best practices, fostering an exchange of knowledge.

On the final day, participants concentrated on planning mentor city tours. They selected top mentoring activities, developed detailed tour plan, and finalized the learning agenda to guide mentee cities. Feedback sessions provided opportunities to refine plans for maximum impact.

In the closing event, Prof. Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz, Director of ITN-BUET, encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained during the workshop to real-world practices.

The workshop concluded with a formal certificate distribution ceremony, acknowledging the commitment of participants to scaling CWIS framework. This event marked a significant step toward empowering cities to lead in inclusive and sustainable sanitation practices.
