The study aimed to design and construct a laboratory-scale model multi-stage filtration (MSF) unit, to investigate the water quality improvement performance and to determine the appropriate design criteria for MSF units for use in Bangladesh. In optimizing appropriate treatment procedures, key areas to be investigated in Bangladesh included the evaluation of more efficient down-flow and up-flow configurations, identification of appropriate media size and type for removal of physical, microbial and chemical contamination The MSF system designed under this research was comprised of three units; Dynamic Roughing Filter (DyRF) unit, Up-flow Roughing Filter (URF) unit and Slow Sand Filter (SSF) unit.
