The sanitation and the climate crises are closely intertwined: Frequent floods can disrupt sanitation services and infrastructure and cause untreated sewage to spread, which can lead to the outbreak of diseases such as cholera, harm ecosystems and burden economies. Moreover, poorly managed sanitation can emit enormous amounts of methane – a powerful greenhouse gas, which fuels the climate crisis. Sanitation can play a key role in addressing the climate crisis. Recognising that, the 2024 Green Climate Fund guidelines help governments and partners secure funding for climate-resilient sanitation.
