SWEEP is tackling the sanitation crisis in low-income communities in Dhaka enables low-income consumers to have human waste removed from septic tanks.

The business was created by Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor through a partnership with the city utility DWASA, and a local entrepreneur who is managing the service.

SWEEP was launched in January 2015 and by August 2016 had served 85,000 people. The business was breaking even after five months, as well as creating revenue for DWASA.

In Bangladesh, SWEEP is the first septic tank emptying service that has been able to generate enough income to cover operating costs, and the possibilities are exciting for scale-up.
