Bangladesh’s climate-resilient WASH initiatives spotlighted at ICWFM side event

Bangladesh has made commendable progress in the WASH sector, yet it faces significant challenges from the impacts of climate change in pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030. Highlighting the critical link between climate change and WASH, ITN-BUET hosted a side event during “The International Conference on Water and Flood Management (ICWFM)”, organized by the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM). This event was held at the CIRDAP Auditorium on October 16, 2023.

Empowering future leaders to ensure sanitation for urban low-income communities

The Department of Civil Engineering at CUET collaborated with the ITN-BUET to conduct a training session on 11 and 12 October 2023. The training aimed to improve civil engineering students’ understanding of sanitation services and Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) systems, with a particular emphasis on their utilization in urban areas with low-income communities.

Protecting sanitation and waste workers’ lives and dignity in Nepal

ADB and ITN-BUET developed a comprehensive training course on ‘Health, Safety, Hygiene, and Infection Prevention & Control (HSH-IPC)’ and successfully implemented it in the Nepalganj and Bharatpur municipalities of Nepal. This initiative aimed to improve the working conditions and overall well-being of these workers.

Empowering DPHE officials: Building capacity on gender-responsive WASH approaches

The training provided a thorough coverage of fundamental gender concepts and gender mainstreaming, Diversity & Social Inclusion, Gender Equality & Inclusion in WASH Services, and Gender Transformative WASH. Dr. Tanvir Ahmed from ITN-BUET underlined the significance of incorporating gender and inclusion at every phase of a project cycle, starting from the initial design phase.

Ehteshamul Rasel Khan, Superintending Engineer at Design Circle DPHE, expressed gratitude to the organizers for arranging this highly beneficial and timely training on a crucial issue. He acknowledged that this training would enhance their understanding of gender and inclusivity concepts. Addressing hygiene challenges and menstrual health awareness among youth in Bangladesh

Inadequate hygiene interventions, including knowledge gaps and taboos, expose adolescents to health hazards, notably impacting areas like menstrual hygiene management (MHM). Acknowledging the urgency to confront these challenges, ITN-BUET and House of Volunteers (HOV) Foundation organized a session titled “Adolescent Awareness on Hygiene and Menstrual Hygiene Management” with the support of UNICEF. Public health engineers capacitated on CWIS

Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) is a public service approach for reaching the urban sanitation SDGs that accelerates progress in providing safe sanitation services. ITN-BUET, in collaboration with the CWIS-FSM Support Cell, DPHE, organized a ‘Specialized Training on CWIS’ for DPHE engineers to enhance their capacity and understandings. Executive Engineers of DPHE representing 24 districts attended the training from 9 to 11 September 2023.
