Bangladesh, recognized as one of the rapidly urbanizing economies in South Asia, has encountered a significant surge in solid waste generation. To address the issues concerning solid waste management (SWM), ITN-BUET, in collaboration with SNV, conducted a workshop titled ‘Policy and Institutional Review on Solid Waste Management (SWM) in Urban Settings of Bangladesh’ on 26 November 2023.

Bangladesh’s rapid urban population growth creates a significant challenge in effectively managing increased human waste due to higher population densities and expanding urban areas. This poses a considerable challenge that can impact national economies, affecting public health and overall quality of life.

A paradigm shift is happening in urban sanitation in Bangladesh, where effective governance and regulation are prioritized for implementing citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) with accountability and transparency. Governance, regulation, and integrity are not yet firmly linked in urban sanitation. ITN-BUET and WIN (Water Integrity Network), Berlin, Germany, have collaborated to integrate governance into CWIS in Bangladesh and conduct associated capacity building of the urban sanitation section actors.

The event, attended by 400 delegates from around the world, positioned Johannesburg as the epicenter for discussions on non-sewered sanitation solutions.

Bangladesh has made commendable progress in the WASH sector, yet it faces significant challenges from the impacts of climate change in pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030. Highlighting the critical link between climate change and WASH, ITN-BUET hosted a side event during “The International Conference on Water and Flood Management (ICWFM)”, organized by the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM). This event was held at the CIRDAP Auditorium on October 16, 2023.

The Department of Civil Engineering at CUET collaborated with the ITN-BUET to conduct a training session on 11 and 12 October 2023.
