A paradigm shift is happening in urban sanitation in Bangladesh, where effective governance and regulation are prioritized for implementing citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) with accountability and transparency. Governance, regulation, and integrity are not yet firmly linked in urban sanitation. ITN-BUET and WIN (Water Integrity Network), Berlin, Germany, have collaborated to integrate governance into CWIS in Bangladesh and conduct associated capacity building of the urban sanitation section actors.

The ‘IWA Specialist Group Conference on Non-Sewered Sanitation’ held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from October 15 to 18, 2023, focused on stimulating innovative solutions and uptake for people not connected to sewers. The event, attended by 400 delegates from around the world, positioned Johannesburg as the epicenter for discussions on non-sewered sanitation solutions.

Sanitation workers play a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness of the cities, yet they often lack the rights and opportunities they deserve. Bangladesh has made commendable progress in the WASH sector, yet it faces significant challenges from the impacts of climate change in pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030. Highlighting the critical link between climate change and WASH, ITN-BUET hosted a side event during “The International Conference on Water and Flood Management (ICWFM)”, organized by the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM). This event was held at the CIRDAP Auditorium on October 16, 2023.

The Department of Civil Engineering at CUET collaborated with the ITN-BUET to conduct a training session on 11 and 12 October 2023. The training aimed to improve civil engineering students’ understanding of sanitation services and Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) systems, with a particular emphasis on their utilization in urban areas with low-income communities.

The DPHE is enhancing emergency services for FDMN in Cox’s Bazar through the EMCRP. ITN-BUET recently conducted a four-day training event in partnership with DPHE on “Programmatic Recovery Framework Approach” and “Emergency Service Delivery in Camp Sanitation” to improve their response.

ADB and ITN-BUET developed a comprehensive training course on ‘Health, Safety, Hygiene, and Infection Prevention & Control (HSH-IPC)’ and successfully implemented it in the Nepalganj and Bharatpur municipalities of Nepal. This initiative aimed to improve the working conditions and overall well-being of these workers.

The training provided a thorough coverage of fundamental gender concepts and gender mainstreaming, Diversity & Social Inclusion, Gender Equality & Inclusion in WASH Services, and Gender Transformative WASH.
