Nine Cities Stepped Ahead to Achieve SDG 6.2 Following CWIS Approach

In order to achieve the sanitation targets under SDG, ITN-BUET and Practical Action jointly organized a daylong capacity-building training program on ‘CWIS Approach and FSM Service Delivery Incorporating National Action Plan’ for the participants from nine cities on 29th August 2022 at the ITN-BUET Seminar Room. Twenty-eight participants attended the event.

Homna Paurashava organized a two-day long training during 23-24 August 2022 on sanitation containment systems (septic tank, soak well, pit latrine) for mason, work assistant/ engineer and constructor together with UNICEF and ITN-BUET.

Step ahead towards CWIS Mentor Cities

Several cities in Bangladesh are leading the safely managed sanitation movement in the country and have the potential to become mentors for Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS). An indicator-based data collection tool was developed following the CWIS 32 matrix to assess the potentiality of cities to become mentors. The tool has been shared with the cities for their input. ITN-BUET organized an online orientation workshop on 17th August 2022 to orient the cities on City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) and discuss the tool and associated queries in detail.

Laboratories are capacitated with personnel to perform fecal sludge testing

ITN-BUET in collaboration with Department of Civil Engineering, BUET has organized a three-day long laboratory training on Fecal Sludge & Wastewater Parameter Analysis for laboratory personnel. The training was held during 2-4 July 2022 at the Fecal Sludge Reference Laboratory established at the Department of Civil Engineering, BUET, 3rd Floor of Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury Building, BUET.

UNICEF and ITN-BUET visited Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) officials on 19th June, 2022 to discuss the prospects of promoting the CWIS approach for addressing the sanitation situation in the city. The Honorable Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation, A.H.M. Khairuzzaman (Liton), hosted the team.

The strategic partnership between ITN-BUET and the Municipal Association of Bangladesh

ITN-BUET and MAB signed the strategic partnership agreement to promote the CWIS approach in the urban sanitation initiatives in Bangladesh by adopting and mainstreaming the learning from each other’s existing programs.

Road to CWIS Mentor Cities: Workshop with Practitioners

The CWIS CB Hub aims to support potential cities with CWIS/FSM showcasing areas to establish them as CWIS mentor cities. These cities will work as learning centers to build the capacity of other cities through different learning-sharing programs. Representatives from sector partners sat together to identify the appropriate mechanism to assess the potentialities of cities to become mentors in a workshop organized by ITN-BUET. The event was held on June 12, 2022.

Strategizing scaling-up of CWIS capacity in partnership with Academic Institutions

On June 8, 2022, a workshop with the academic partners was held in the ITN Seminar room to further concretize the partnership. Focal persons from CUET, SUST, KUET, RUET and AUW discussed their experiences on WASH capacity-building activities, present strengths and further requirements to collaborate.
