The winner for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2023 in Bangladesh (SJWPBD) has been selected after a rigorous competition among eight finalist teams with water-related research projects. This selection grants them the opportunity to advance to the final round, where they will compete alongside talented participants from around the world in Stockholm, Sweden.

The SJWPBD Award Ceremony 2023 took place on Saturday, May 27th, at ITN-BUET Seminar room. The event, organized by House of Volunteers Foundation Bangladesh with ITN-BUET as the strategic partner, showcased the immense talent and unwavering dedication of all participating teams.

Since the competition’s inauguration in November 2022, a total of 174 students aged between 15 and 20 registered to participate. Following a meticulous evaluation and screening process, the panel of judges carefully selected eight project papers for the final stage of the national competition out of the 27 entries.

The ceremony was honored by the esteemed presence of Prof. Satya Prasad Majumder, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and Her Excellency Ms. Alexandra Berg von Linde, the Swedish Ambassador. Additionally, the ceremony featured distinguished guests including Prof. Abdul Jabbar Khan, Pro VC of BUET; Prof. Tanvir Ahmed, Director of ITN-BUET; Ms. Hasin Jahan, Country Director of WaterAid and Mr. Shafiqul Alam, WASH Specialist, UNICEF Bangladesh.

During the ceremony, HE Ms. Alexandra Berg von Linde shared her vision for a sustainable water future by adding, “It is well known that Bangladesh is encountering different water issues. I am mesmerized by the effort of the students to bring out solutions to these.”

The winner of the competition was a team named Aquatic Avengers, composed of Alman Sikder and Mir Mohammad Ali. Their project, titled “Eco-Friendly and Cost-Effective Water Purification for Highly Polluted and Saline Sources Using Solar Powered Distillation and Activated Carbon,” impressed the judges with its innovative approach.

Additionally, two dedicated youths, Ayesha Siddika Nodia and Mir Mohammed Ali, were honored with The Best Ambassador Award during the ceremony. They were recognized for their exceptional leadership skills and dedication in promoting SJWPBD’23.
