Developing of National Compendium of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Technologies for Disaster Response

Organizations working in disaster response in the country recognize the require a readily available working compendium of WASH technologies with technical details & drawings, materials specification with quantity, and costs, which is currently absent in the WASH sector in Bangladesh. In this regard, ITN-BUET is providing the technical support to develop a National Compendium of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Technologies for Disaster Response. The WASH Compendium presents technical details of each WASH technology, including system description, major components, anticipated risks and important O&M issues. Regeneration/rehabilitation of the water supply options, and desludging of sanitation options are also included in the Compendium. The emergency situations/contexts under which a particular technology is suitable is also described.

The Compendium also includes technical drawings/sketches of the technologies, including plan and sectional views to help the construction of these technologies in the field. Finally, cost estimate, including BoQ has been presented for each of the technologies included in this Compendium.

Co-Composting of Fecal Sludge and Tannery Liming Sludge: A Novel Approach

For managing both the fecal and tannery liming sludges by making an agriculture grade compost through their mixing, ITN-BUET has commenced a research project on conversion of fecal and tannery waste to resource (compost). Dr. Md. Abul Hashem, Associate Professor, Department of Leather Engineering of KUET will lead this research as Principal investigator. This research will focus on both laboratory scale investigation and field level application. Compost produced through this research will be applied in the field to investigate the seed germination capacity of the crops. Plant growth and uptaking of metals and nutrient will be assessed. The proposed research is expected to reduce the volume of fecal and tannery wastes and find out a suitable alternative use.

Major Objectives:

To find out the suitability of using fecal sludge and liming sludge for making agricultural grade compost
To examine physicochemical characteristics of the compost e.g., nutrient NPKS (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium, and Sulphur) and metals content, etc.
To evaluate the seed germination capacity of the prepared compost

EMCRP capacity building project

The World Bank financed, and DPHE implemented Emergency Multi-Sector Rohingya Crisis Response Project (EMCRP) plans to build the capacity of DPHE officials from all 8 working Upazila and district office (Cox’s Bazar), and other areas, Government officials and Consultants of PMU/RPMU, TA/Social Firm, LGI leaders and officials, the representative from other stakeholders through imparting training of eight different training topics. ITN-BUET has provided assistance to develop the 8 training modules and provide 16 batches of training events for the target audience.

Capacity Building Training on “Systematic and Scientific Approaches for Targeting Poor and Unserved People in Arsenic Affected Areas for Arsenic Safe Water”

1. Overview
Improved facilities for drinking water supply do not guarantee that the water is safe to drink unless it is tested and meets recommended water quality guidelines. In Bangladesh, there are 17.5 million people exposed to arsenic contamination in their drinking water. Testing the arsenic concentration in water at all points used for drinking and cooking can determine which areas are at risk and need new safe water points to be installed. This systematic approach and results-based evidence can also help eliminate local elite influence on site selection and target the poor and unserved population in a more equitable way. Service providers such as the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) and other Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene agencies should follow equity-based site selection criteria.

2. Objectives
The overall objective of this assignment is to improve the technical capacity of DPHE on arsenic screening and data management, and to use this data for allocating resources and for equity-based site selection through training and knowledge sharing.

The specific objectives of the assignment are to support the capacity building of DPHE officials on safe water supply in arsenic-prone areas, on arsenic screening and visualization for targeting hot spots, and on conducting community-based analysis to target poor and vulnerable clusters that need arsenic-free safe water.

The assignment will be carried out in two components: the development of a training module and the conduct of training workshops for DPHE at the central and divisional levels.
