Development of National Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Guideline for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Bangladesh

Hygiene

Period: June 2020 - ongoing

Client(s): PSB of Local Government Division , UNICEF Bangladesh

Water and sanitation policy 1998 stated that O&M would be the responsibility of the user groups. But in case of higher-level services options like PSF, MAR, AIRP, piped water system and community, and public toilets etc., this is beyond the capacity of individuals to ensure its proper O&M unless the system is in place. Sporadic effort has been made from the sector partner to develop different O&M models, but these are not streamlined due to lack of policy guidelines and lack of common sector O&M strategy. On this backdrop Local Govt. The Division (LGD) formed a Technical Committee to formulate the National Operation and Maintenance Guideline for WASH. The Technical Committee requested ITN-BUET through UNICEF to provide technical assistance to draft the National Operation and Maintenance Strategy/Guideline for WASH infrastructures.
