The Trainer’s Guide on “Fecal Sludge Management: An Element of Citywide Inclusive Sanitation” is an aid for the course facilitator(s). Training professionals in the FSM sector can utilize the Guide for enhancing fecal sludge management practitioners and implementors’ capacity. The training aims to build capacity on FSM and Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) planning and implementation for municipality engineers and officials. Development projects on FSM can also utilize this training material for designing practical FSM action plans for secondary towns.
The Trainer’s Guide is a comprehensive module for the LGI and city-level engineers and officials’ capacity-building training. ITN-BUET and DPHE explicitly used the Trainer’s Guide to build the capacity of more than 160 officials on FSM and CWIS in 2019-20. The Guide includes:
1. Trainer’s Essentials
2. Stepwise Lesson Plans
3. Presentation Slides and activity details
4. Preparation of FSM Action Plan for Paurashavas
5. Case Studies
6. Workbook
This document aims to assist the trainers in carrying out the sessions as per each session’s design. The interactive sessions in training are designed to make the learning environment enjoyable without burdening the participants with complex information. The Trainer’s Guide will support the facilitator to comprehend the training system and link sessions with the ultimate goal of developing an FSM Action Plan. The Guide is user-friendly and consists of easy-to-follow instructions. At the end of the session, the participants will be enthusiastic about mainstreaming FSM in their cities and develop an FSM Action Plan for their respective cities.
ITN-BUET designed the training module with the collaboration of the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation (CAWST), Canada and FSM sector partners including the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), WaterAid Bangladesh, Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, Practical Action, Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB), Village Education Resource Centre (VERC) and Action for Sustainable and Green Development (ASGD).
