– told Mr. Mahmudur Rahman Titu, Panel Mayor of RpCC in a workshop at Rangpur on 13 September 2019.
Panel Mayor Mr. Titu graced the event as Chief Guest on behalf of the Hon’ble Mayor, who couldn’t attend the event due to urgent reassignment. Mr. Titu emphasized on public awareness and proper planning for FSM in the city. He also mentioned that monitoring the construction of septic tank properly is a challenge for City Corporation (CC), but CC is committed to do that. As start, RpCC is constructing a FSTP at Nasniar Bill area of the city over a 10-acre land along with treatment system for solid and medical waste.
ITN-BUET organized the workshop at Hotel Rose View, Rangpur with the financial support from Unicef under the leadership of PSB, LGD and local support from Rangpur City Corporation. Ward Councilors including female Councilors, officials from RpCC, govt. departments like DPHE, LGED, NGOs, Civil Society Organizations, Press were present in the workshop and provide their valuable comments.
The workshop stated with the welcome note by Mr. Md. Abdur Rauf, Joint Secretary, Policy Support Branch (PSB), LGD. Mr. Rauf explained the objectives of the workshop and urged for active participation of all to make the event successful.
Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman, Ex-professor of BUET and renowned sanitation expert in the country urged for strong leadership of Mayor and his council in his presentation to take forward safely managed sanitation at Rangpur City. He also added that current capacity of RpCC should be enhanced to ensure sanitation services by the City Corporation. Mr. Alauddin Ahmed, Project Manager, ITN-BUET made another presentation on IRF on FSM for CC in the workshop.
Mr. Asif Ahsan, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rangpur district gave importance for considering waste management holistically in his speech as Special Guest of the event. He congratulated City Corporation for taking initiative to construct FSTP for treating fecal sludge in the city with the support from WSUP.
Additional Secretary (WS), LGD, MoLGRD&C and Chairperson of the workshop told that public awareness on importance of sanitation and hygiene is very low compare to water, and City Corporation has strong role to improve sanitation for protecting public health.
