As part of its commitment to strengthening municipal knowledge management and advancing Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) in Bangladesh, ITN-BUET, with support from the Gates Foundation, established a dedicated CWIS Knowledge Corner at Kushtia Municipality under the “CWIS Scaling and Innovation Project.” Kushtia is one of the six municipalities being supported by ITN-BUET as a CWIS Mentor City, where local experiences and innovations are being documented to facilitate peer learning among urban local bodies. The Kushtia CWIS Knowledge Corner serves as a dedicated knowledge platform to showcase the municipality’s sanitation journey and practical experiences in CWIS and Fecal Sludge Management (FSM), providing an accessible resource for municipalities, practitioners, development partners, students, and researchers.
On 17 September 2026, ITN-BUET formally handed over the CWIS Knowledge Corner to the Kushtia Municipality authority, marking the official transfer of the facility and reinforcing the municipality’s role as a CWIS Mentor City. The handover ceremony was attended by Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz, Director of ITN-BUET, who officially handed over the corner to Mr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, Administrator of Kushtia Municipality, in the presence of Ms. Rashma Khatun, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ms. Sabina Islam, Assistant Engineer (W&S), and Mr. Ranver Ahmad, Town Planner, along with other municipal officials and representatives from the Kushtia municipality. The ITN-BUET delegation also included Mr. Alauddin Ahmed, Project Manager; Mr. Kazi Amin, Knowledge Management Specialist; Ms. Qazi Aniqua Zahra, Project Officer; and Mr. Abdullah Shamil Siddique, Communication Associate.
The Knowledge Corner features information highlighting Kushtia Municipality’s progress and experiences in fecal sludge management and Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS). It includes visual materials, knowledge products, and resources developed by ITN-BUET, documenting the municipality’s sanitation initiatives, institutional practices, and experiences in managing sanitation services. The corner provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about Kushtia’s sanitation journey and explore practical approaches that can inform sanitation planning and service delivery in other urban areas.
The programme concluded with the formal handover of the CWIS Knowledge Corner to Kushtia Municipality. As a permanent knowledge space within the municipality, the corner will preserve and document Kushtia’s sanitation journey, showcase its experiences and practices in CWIS and FSM, and serve as a continuous learning platform for municipal officials, practitioners, students, researchers, and visitors.
The establishment of the CWIS Knowledge Corner reflects ITN-BUET’s ongoing commitment to strengthening municipal capacity and institutionalizing knowledge under the CWIS Scaling and Innovation Project. By documenting local experiences and making them accessible, the initiative will foster peer learning and enable other municipalities to learn from Kushtia’s sanitation journey. The corner is expected to support the exchange of knowledge, encourage the adaptation and replication of relevant good practices, and contribute to evidence-based urban sanitation governance across Bangladesh.
