“We have to overcome our challenges, by being responsible and taking initiatives to work together for the development of FSM “-Said Chief Guest Mr Md. Jahangir Alam, Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation in a sensitization workshop at Gazipur on 20 February 2020. Mr. Jahangir emphasized the importance of local representative’s role for the successful implementation and development of FSM. He was confident that GCC will be able to develop a sustainable waste management system. He assured to give his full support and assistance and urged every responsible stakeholder to come forward.

ITN-BUET organized the workshop at Gazipur City Corporation office, with the financial support from Unicef under the leadership of PSB, LGD and local support from Gazipur City Corporation. Over 76 Participants including Ward Councilors, officials from GCC, govt. departments like DPHE, DoE, DAE, LGED, NGOs, Civil Society Organizations, Press were present in the workshop.

The workshop started with welcome speech given by Mr. Kazi Ashraf Uddin, Additional Secretary of LGD. Mr. Ashraf explained the objective of the workshop and hoped that the participants will be benefitted by it through active participation.

GCC mayor requests participation from all stakeholders to make Gazipur a model city for proper Fecal Sludge Management

Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman, Professor, Civil Engineering, UAP and Ex-professor, Civil Engineering, BUET and renowned sanitation expert in the country emphasized on the leadership role of the decision makers of GCC, particularly of the mayor for a meaningful improvement of sanitation. He also hoped that GCC will be able to enhance their capacity in such a way so that they can include FSM in the waste management system and be an example for other city corporations. Mr. Alauddin Ahmed, Project Manager of ITN-BUET, presented a brief overview of the Institutional and Regulatory Framework for FSM.

Mr. S. M. Tarikul Islam, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gazipur, was the special guest of the event. Mr. Tarikul noted that it is now high time to safely manage the sanitation issues of the country and to develop a proper waste management system.

Additional Secretary (WS), LGD, MoLGRD&C and Chairperson of the workshop, Mr. Md. Zahirul Islam hoped that the stakeholders of FSM will take the leadership role to work together to reach the SDG goal.
