In a move to accelerate the progress in leveraging CWIS-FSM, the prototype of the “CWIS Knowledge Repository” platform has been launched by Mr. Md Khairul Islam, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (MoLGRD&C), Bangladesh. The launching ceremony was held on 21st February 2023, at the 21st African Water Association (AfWA) Congress & Exhibition and 7th International Faecal Sludge Management Conference at Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

To promote the access to knowledge and support continuous learning, the Knowledge Repository will serve as a centralized hub for information, guidelines, case studies, technical reports, policy briefs, and educational resources on city-wide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) and Fecal Sludge Management (FSM).

The web platform is designed to support research and learning needs and aims to address the challenge of fragmentation in the sanitation sector by bringing together diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, government officials, researchers, entrepreneurs, I/NGOs, students, and their knowledge resources in one place. The feedback on the prototype of the platform will be incorporated over the coming month to make it fully operational by 31st March 2023.

During the launch, Mr. Md Khairul Islam, Additional Secretary, MoLGRD&C, expressed his hope that the platform will be a valuable resource for policymakers and practitioners working to improve sanitation systems in cities and urban areas. He encouraged everyone to explore the website and contribute to the knowledge-sharing efforts.

Mr. Dewan Kamal Ahmed, President, Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB) appreciated the launching of the website as a broader effort to promote sustainable and inclusive development of the sanitation system across the sector.

Representatives from LGD, MoLGRD&C, DPHE, CWIS-FSM Support cell, MAB, BUET, WSUP, WaterAid, Oxfam, ENPHO, IsDB, NFSSM Alliance, ITN-BUET and other sector stakeholders were present in the event. Key dignitaries include- Mr. Md Khalid Hossain Yead, General Secretary, MAB; Mr. Tushar Mohon Shadhu Khan, Additional Chief Engineer, DPHE; Mr. Shafiqul Hasan, Co-chair, CWIS-FSM Support Cell; Ms. Bhawana Sharma, Executive Director, Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO), Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Ali, Professor, BUET; Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, Director, ITN-BUET; Mr. Alauddin Ahmed, Project Manager, ITN-BUET; Mr. Habibur Rahman, Country Director, Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) Bangladesh; and Mr. Md Tahmidul Islam, Technical Advisor – WASH, WaterAid Bangladesh.

The journey of the knowledge repository represents a significant step towards improving the effectiveness and impact of sanitation development efforts, particularly enabling the partners to learn from each other’s experiences and successes.
